Introduction to the Minitrack on Self-Organized Criticality
نویسنده
چکیده
Many large complex systems seem to exhibit evidence of self-organized criticality. Examples range from the much-studied sandpiles to the Internet. The minitrack includes five papers focused on such behavior in the bulk electric power system. Two of the papers analyze data for large disturbances in the power system gathered by the North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) for the years 1984 through 1999. The authors conclude that the data is consistent with the power system being a self-organized critical system. Three of the papers introduce Markov processes or models into the power network environment to capture the process of selforganization or occurrence of cascading outages.

A new model of self-organized criticality is proposed. An algebra of operators is introduced which is similar to that used for the Abelian sandpile model. The structure of the configurational space is determined and the number of recurrent states is found. Since the introduction of self-organized criticality (SOC) [1], there has been considerable interest in the study of cellular automata which...

We present a general conceptual framework for self-organized criticality (SOC), based on the recognition that it is nothing but the expression, "unfolded" m a suitable

We present a pedagogical introduction to self-organized criticality (SOC), unraveling its connections with nonequilibrium phase transitions. There are several paths from a conventional critical point to SOC. They begin with an absorbing-state phase transition (directed percolation is a familiar example), and impose supervision or driving on the system; two commonly used methods are extremal dyn...
متن کاملThe Distribution of Business Firms Size, Stochasticities, and Self-organized Criticality
Introduction: Decades ago, it has been noticed that the distribution of the size of business firms is "almost always highly skewed and its upper tail resembles the Pareto distribution (i.e. is a power law)".1 This old and intriguing observation is still true today (Figure 1) and is clearly a robust pattern. Since firms engaged in very different activities contribute to build this distribution, ...
متن کاملSelf-organized criticality and the predictability of human behavior
The behavior of normal individuals and psychiatric patients vary in a similar way following power laws. The presence of identical patterns of behavioral variation occurring in individuals with different levels of activity is suggestive of self-similarity phenomena. Based on these findings, we propose that the human behavior in social context can constitute a system exhibiting self-organized cri...
